Magnetic medicine: a complet set of solutions for research in gastroenterology

Abstract

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is the main responsible for the absorption of water, nutrients and electrolytes, present in all food we ingest. Although its functions are not fully understood, it is a known fact that the most of the GIT functions are influenced by both environmental and individual factors. The gold-standard techniques employed on diagnosing such pathologies usually rely on controlled environment, highly trained personnel, high radiation doses exposures and are still relatively expensive. The biomagnetic techniques, however, offer a powerful alternative to monitor GIT physiological properties. These systems usually consists of externally monitoring magnetic markers, which represents a simple, safe, accessible and non-invasive alternative to the traditional techniques. These unique features combined provide an extraordinary diagnosis potential, allowing us to unrestrictedly assess several physiological and physiopathological conditions. Among these techniques, the Alternate Current Biosusceptometry system is an important biomedical toll, capable being employed on in vitro and in vivo study protocols, on both animal models and humans. Although the AC Biosusceptometry is a well stablished technique among the biomedical systems, the lack of a proper dedicated instrumentation influences directly in its implementation onto a wider range of scientific and clinical applications. Aiming at reducing costs related with system's construction and making the AC Biosusceptometry system product ion in large scale viable, we intend to employ dedicated amplification and acquisition systems, developed and patented by our research group. Also, we will enhance each aspect related with our system, from hardware and software development, to product design. The application of marketing strategies will help us make our system competitive. For instance, we intend to develop different setup systems, with different complexity levels, aiming to offer a wide variety of product s, with different applications. Furthermore, we expect to develop and improve specific scientific protocols, with all the systems described here, allowing us to perform a complete evaluation on GIT physiological properties, such as gastric emptying, gastrointestinal transit, gastric and colonical motility, and still offering a multi-instrumentation platform, gathering different physiological properties, such as heart rate, arterial pressure, among others. Summarizing, this project might be the fundamental step towards a scientific and clinical development of a new diagnosis modality, with and extraordinary and untouched potential. (AU)
