São Paulo School of Advanced Science on First Light: stars, galaxies and black holes in the epoch of re-ionization

Abstract

This intensive 10-day school will introduce the future generation of young astronomers to the forefront of the theoretical and observational developments of the astrophysics of the epoch of re-ionisation. The school is centred around 8 main lecture courses delivered by top international experts in this field that will cover the cosmic dark ages, the formation of the first stars, galaxies and black holes, and their present-day descendants such as the Milky Way and other galaxies. In addition, a number of focus lectures will highlight new instrumentation and surveys relevant to the epoch of re-ionisation, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, the Giant Magellan Telescope and the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph. A practical introduction to the school's topics will be provided through tutorial sessions, while student participation will be encouraged through student talks and poster presentations. (AU)
