Abstract

By focusing on corporate crime and systemic corruption, the research project tackles a socially relevant topic that deserves more attention from the academia. Corruption scandals have been frequently exposed on a global scale, both in less developed regions and the developed countries. The consequences of corruption are not confined to its negative impact on the economy. Rather, the long-standing corrupt interplay and interaction between the private and public sectors in some countries, such as Brazil, have seriously undermined the democratic institutions in these countries. The proposed research project is concentrating on institutional changes of anti-corruption policies, legislations, and law enforcement in Brazil, relating them to a series of comparative analyses in different regions of the world, carried out by our research group as well. Analyzing the biggest corruption case in Brazil's history, the Operation Carwash as well as other past and present cases, we will try to find out how the system of economic and political corruption operated and how effective the institutional and organizational changes have been so far to fight corruption and corporate crime in Brazil. Will Brazil get rid of its pattern of systemic corruption? Using a multi-level framework of institutional analysis, we map key changes in the institutional setting of Brazil's judiciary, relating them to organizational forms of corruption on company and political party level, as well as the mindsets of the perpetrators. The research project will provide a sound and thorough analytical framework for the mechanism that led to systemic corruption and of the institutions that are supporting the fight against it. (AU)
