Evaluation of milk production produced by family agroindustry under environmental aspects

Abstract

The strengthening of the family agroindustry in Brazil, through the creation of several governmental programs, has based on the expectation of improving the income and employment of a significant part of the population, since about 70% of the products consumed in the country come from family agriculture. From the mapping of family agroindustry previously carried out by Pazinato (2017), the milk and derivatives sector has significant participation in the State of São Paulo. Milk is a nutritionally rich food, consumed since infancy in its raw or processed form, such as cheeses and yogurts. Given the representativeness and importance of milk production in the country and in the State of São Paulo, the objective of this study is to measure the environmental interfaces of milk production produced in São Paulo's agroindustry, a concern that affects all productive sectors, challenged by climate change to become more efficient. This study will be conducted using the principles of the Life Cycle Assessment tool, which is based on measuring the impacts of a particular product or process, from its basic raw materials to the end of use, to characterize the environmental profiles of this sector, mainly related to the use of energy, water, and waste generation. The study provides for the collection of productive data through technical visits to production units, analysis, data validation and treatment through scientific rigor basis required by international standards for these studies, for data qualification and comparability. There isexpectationthat the results obtained in this study can identify improvements for the sector that increase its technological, environmental and economic efficiency. (AU)
