SILVIMETRICA - low-cost laser scanning and processing of 3D data in tree environments

Abstract

Currently, forest measurement consists of the use of rudimentary equipment and methods. The subjectivity in the data collection due to the lack of technology of these practices compromises the precision and accuracy of the information, which is the basis for the entire chain of forest planning. Traditional fieldwork is manual, costly, expensive, inefficient and risky for workers. Rural areas are increasingly suffering from shortages of labor, increasing services whose demand has increased, leaving the forest sector eager for new alternatives. In this context, we aim the disruption of current methods of forest measurement, that may be feasible through this project. It consists of performing the three-dimensional reconstruction of trees with high precision, allowing the generation of essential information for the producers and industries of the sector. The service consists of using a commercial laser scanner that provides a dense cloud of points, processed with algorithms specially designed by experts in the field and specific for use in dendrometry. The use of this new technology allows to provide more accurate data and eliminate the extensive and costly work of traditional data collection. One of the advantages of this proposal is the elimination of random sources of error, linked to manual measurement, subject to the subjectivity of the measurer. When digitizing a portion of forest inventory, we can tridimensionalize entire trees, allowing the direct measurement of commercial volume from the cloud of points, without the need to cut down trees in the field. The result of the implementation of this project will be to apply top three-dimensionalization technologies in the forestry sector, making the fieldwork more efficient, capable of generating large volumes of data with a high level of detail, in a fast and innovative way.
