Abstract
Low zinc intake causes severe health problems. An estimated 800,000 child deaths per year is related to zinc deficiency. A simple and quick strategy to combat this problem would be agronomic biofortification with zinc in the edible parts of plants. Lettuce is today, among leafy vegetables, the most produced and consumed in Brazil and has the potential to absorb large amounts of zinc. Thus, the objective of the present project is to develop technological and innovative research applied to the lettuce production chain, studying its biofortification with different doses of zinc (0, 10, 20, 30 mg dm-3) and use of beneficial bacteria (Pseudomonas and Burkholderia). Independent experiments will be carried out in two seasons for two cultivars (Crespa-type Vanda and Americana-type Laurel) to generate information to create new processes and products. The experimental design will be in randomized blocks, in a 4 x 3 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The data obtained will be statistically analysed by analysis of variance and by means of the test F. If there is significance for the Zn doses, a regression analysis will be done and if there is a significance for bacteria, Tukey test (5%) will be applied to compare the means of the treatments. (AU)
