Abstract

This project is part of the research in progress in the Laboratory of Studies on Ethnic-Racial Relations and Urban Space - LabRaça, recently created at FAUUSP. Rejecting a perspective that presents the history of São Paulo city in the republican period from the point of view of the white elite, this project aims to reconstruct this history by means of including of the blacks active subjects. Our concern is for the blacks locations in the city, the ways of appropriation of their neighborhoods and settlements and the production of the collective memory of these places, understood here as a form of resistance to the expulsion that erased the visibility of this group in the city. The realization of the critical mapping proposed through this project, coupled with an investigation into the process of concentrations of black population in certain neighborhoods of the city in the period in question, will make it possible to evaluate the conditions of their permanence in the neighborhoods, providing inputs for an analysis of the strategies of resistance, fixation and appropriation of the city used by this population.
