Contribution of the natural isotopes of uranium for evaluating weathering processes in hydrographic basins from Araxá (MG)

Abstract

The study of weathering processes in Brazil using the natural radionuclides from the uranium decay series (238U, 234U and 210Pb) have been conducted without adopting an integrated approache. Thus, they do not allow establish appropriate comparison of the results obtained as the methods utilized are very distinct in terms of procedures, theoretical background and constraints involved. This research project aims to provide information in this direction. The selected study area is the hydrothermal spa Araxá (MG) due to several reasons, among them, the presence of hydrographic basins of variable surface area that are characterized by lithologies exhibiting distinct radionuclides activity concentration as identified by the previous geochemical surveys held in the region.
