Geochronology and terrigenous sedimentation of the mud depocenters from the Southern Brazilian continental shelf

Abstract

Studies on muddy depocenters on the Brazilian shelf have been developed since the 1970s on the basis of the REMAC Project (Kowsmann and Costa, 1979), but have been intensified since the beginning of this century by increasing the capacity of research centers (eg, Mahiques et al., 2009, Nagai et al., 2009, Reed et al., 2009, Gyllencreutz et al., 2010, Dominguez et al., 2013). The importance of the study of these depocenters is related not only to the fact that they are good archives of the climatic and oceanographic variations of the Southwest Atlantic, but also because they constitute zones of potential accumulation of anthropogenic material (De Mahiques et al., 2016).
