Survival and prognostic factors of patients with breast cancer in the state of São Paulo

Abstract

Objectives: The aims of this study will be to describe the characteristics of patients with breast cancer included in the hospital-based cancer registry of the Fundação Oncocentro de São Paulo (FOSP, in Portuguese), estimate their 60-month disease-specific survival probabilities and breast cancer prognostic factors. Methods: The study will be an historical cohort. The sample will consist of approximately 75,000 women with invasive breast cancer diagnosed between 2000 and 2013 and included in the hospital-based cancer registry of the Fundação Oncocentro de São Paulo, a public agency that aggregates 77 hospital-based cancer registries in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The event of interest will be breast cancer-specific mortality. Living cases at the end of follow-up (December 31, 2017), loss to follow-up and death other than that due to breast cancer will be considered censored on the date of the last contact or date of death. The study will follow the ethical precepts of the Brazilian National Health Council Resolution number 466/2012. This study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Botucatu Medical School, São Paulo State University, Brazil. Proposed data analysis: Descriptive analysis and survival analysis will be performed using the Kaplan-Meyer method. Survival curves will be compared using the log-rank test. Hazard ratios (HR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) will also be estimated using Cox's proportional hazards model. Expected results: as far as we know, this will be the largest study ever performed in Brazil and with the longest follow-up time regarding survival of women with invasive breast cancer. The research finding will be presented at the FOSP and São Paulo State Health Department with the aim of improving the attention to breast cancer patients. We pretend also present our finds at scientific events and publish the paper in a prestigious scientific journal. (AU)
