Evaluation of the association of greenhouse gas emissions with economic and health indicators in São Paulo state

Abstract

Climate change and its catastrophic effects are already a global reality, which can also be observed in Brazil by the irregular rainfall regime, for instance. Relationships between economic development and Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) have been focused by many studies, in order to comprehend the relationship between those variables and the energy consumption through mathematical models and emissions impact prediction. The industry segment has a key role in countries' economy, affecting the productivity chain and the economic development. Consequently, this segment is an important factor in economic indicators and greenhouse gases emissions. There are several studies globally analysing heat waves and weather extremes associated to mortality indicators. However, few studies have analysed the impacts of GHG's emissions on human health. São Paulo is the largest federative unit of Brazil in economic and industrial terms. In 2016, it represented one third of country's economy. Therefore, this research aims to study the relationship between economic growth, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and health impacts for São Paulo State from 2000 to 2018, analysing models proposed in the literature and adjusting new ones. The multivariable models of literature will be applied as well as new ones to be developed in order to evaluate the association of GHG's emissions with economic and health indicators. The results will serve to demonstrate the magnitude of the impact and to generate subsidies for public policies' development, which can mitigate the deleterious effects of GHG emissions. (AU)
