Challenges and opportunities in using integrated management systems for developing and reporting corporate sustainability

Abstract

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards use the Triple Bottom Line approach of reporting financial, environmental and social performance. This approach could be seen to be similar to management based on Integrated Management Systems (IMS) where often ISO-based management systems are used to combine Quality Management, Environmental Management, Occupational and Safety Management, Social Responsibility Management, etc. It seems that in spite of the similarity in objectives relating to managing the Triple Bottom Line, sustainability management based on the GRI standards and IMS based on ISO standards and guidelines appear as two entirely separate issues. Based on the above, the two main objectives of this SPRINT proposal are to: - elaborate the research project provisionally titled "Challenges and opportunities in using integrated management systems for developing and reporting corporate sustainability" to be submitted to FAPESP and other funding agency accessible to Uppsala University-Campus Gotland and; contribute to the ongoing research entitled "Integrated management system as an element for development of sustainability in industrial companies: an Ibero-American contribution" (regular research project funded by FAPESP process 2017/18304-7). The expected results are: - Elaboration of 1 scientific paper for submission in international journal of high impact factor, as a result of Prof. Raine's participation in the ongoing FAPESP project 2017/18304-7; lectures given by Prof. Raine on corporate sustainability at FEG/UNESP; lectures given by Prof. Otávio on corporate sustainability and IMS at Uppsala University-Campus Gotland; and development of a research project for submission to FAPESP and the funding agency accessible to Uppsala University-Campus Gotland. All previous expected results will favor the development of the partnership between FEG-UNESP and Uppsala University-Campus Gotland, providing both universities with an expansion of their networks of research cooperation.
