Development of a platform for publication, availability and referencing of environmental and biodiversity data

Abstract

There is a large amount of data and information about the environment distributed among various institutions and stored in non-standardized structures and in independent information systems. In many cases, there is system redundancy, lack of data qualification, and also efforts to collect and analyze primary data. Thus, this project aims to develop an innovative web platform to collect, standardize, integrate and publish data from biodiversity monitoring, environmental licensing, research activities and other initiatives that produce biodiversity, ecological, socio-environmental and geographical data. This platform will contain a public data portal that hosts datasets of any structure and has full interoperability with other biodiversity data networks. In addition to the public portal, the platform will contain a private, cloud-hosted custom portal service for research and monitoring projects. This framework may be customized in a short time and used for any type of environmental data. A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) registration tool will also be developed for data sets hosted on the public portal. This mechanism will allow the publication of primary data sets on the internet with the possibility of referencing these data in technical reports and scientific articles, supporting datapapers and other scientific publications. It is hoped that the publication of data and the possibility of referencing will open up a range of possibilities for the reuse of data for new research projects. This data, being standardized, structured and traceable, can form a reliable source of information for projects, without the need for new data collection. (AU)
