Modernization of the computer and network structure: Phase 2 - Backup, security and structured network connections

Abstract

The mission of the Agronomic Institute (IAC/APTA/SAA) is to generate and transfer science, technology and products for the optimization of plant production systems, with environmental responsibility, aiming at socioeconomic development and food security through research, training of human resources and heritage preservation. In recent years, special emphasis has been placed on the transfer of knowledge generated to society, especially the provision of technical knowledge to the rural producer. Throughout its existence IAC has already transferred to the productive sector technological packages of varieties developed by IAC (1060 cultivars developed from 99 species), methods for diagnosing plant diseases, interlaboratory program for soil analysis for agricultural purposes, fruit propagating material of roots and tubers, seeds of various grains, and seeds and buds of various varieties of citrus. It has also trained over 40,000 workers on pesticide application. Given this scenario, it is interesting to note that the maintenance and constant improvement of the IAC internet network, or more broadly its information technology (IT) environment, is fundamental for both knowledge generation and data transfer to society. There are currently approximately 280 research projects in progress in the 12 Centers, distributed between Campinas, Cordeiropolis, Jundiai, Ribeirao Preto, Votuporanga, Mococa, Capao Bonito, Itarare, Tatui and Jau. Together, these projects represent 40% of all ongoing projects at the Paulista Agribusiness Technology Agency - APTA, which in addition to IAC also has 5 other ICTESPs - ITAL, IZ, IB, IP and Regional Apta. This intrinsic feature of an institution based on agronomic experimentation, in which regional variations in soil and climate conditions are important factors of plant production or quality, requires an internet network capable of enabling communication between all institution's professionals (to enhance knowledge generation efforts) as well as the rapid transfer of technology to society by electronic means. Thus, IAC has invested in the improvement of the computer network to maintain excellence in its activities. Invested in the repair and improvement of the physical part (fiber optics and switches, among others) and the upgrade/upgrade of software for security of use and data storage. The enhancements described above are critical to avoid loss or disruption of research, innovation and technology transfer activities. Thus, the present proposal aims to continue the restructuring of the Internet network of the Agronomic Institute (IAC), a project initiated in 2015 through FAPESP funding, process 2015/15083-4. (AU)
