Exploring research opportunities between air quality modeling and artificial intelligence

Abstract

Air is a vital resource on the planet and today is threatened by high levels of pollution caused in part by anthropogenic activities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), poor air quality causes 1 in 10 deaths globally; 7 million people die every year due to diseases caused by pollution. In addition, it is also a contributing factor to climate change, specifically global warming due to the increase in concentrations of greenhouse gases. Particularly, megacities like Sao Paulo or Lima present high levels of air pollution due to vehicular and industrial activity. This creates the need to study the dynamics of air pollutants in urban areas, as well as to develop monitoring systems that can foresee and alert people and authorities when air pollution levels become harmful. The present proposal of collaboration responds to this need as an attempt to gather synergies to understand air quality in our localities. (AU)
