Abstract

It is well established that women with previous gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) form an 'at risk' group for the development of glucose intolerance in later life. If decreased insulin secretion or insulin resistance is responsible for the development of glucose / intolerance in those women remains unclear. This may be in part the consequence of: 1) different racial composition of the groups studied previously; 2) poor matching between the GSM and the control groups, and 3) utilization of not adequate methodology. We, therefore, propose to evaluate insulin secretion and tissue insulin sensitivity in Caucasian normal glucose tolerant women with previous GDM, well-matched with the control group using the hyper- and euglycemic clamps respectively. We are expecting that this project may shed some light on the pathogenesis NIDDM. (AU)
