Abstract

Soccer is the most popular and played sport and spurs global economy with US$0.5 trillion every year. As in any contact sport and the high risk of injuries are high among professional players. Injury-related losses are particularly high in this case. The search for better stress monitoring methods has led to infrared thermography (IRT), an imaging method that captures body infrared emitted radiation with a camera that works as a photography camera capturing radiation in the visible spectrum. Since infrared emission is a function of temperature, the infrared image can be called a thermogram. This thermogram being able to depict slight variations in the emitting surface (skin), that indicate underlying hypo and hyperthermic processes, such as those related to injury or proneness to. The concept of evaluating muscle condition with IRT is incorporated in the comercial products. However, the dissemination of such powerful technique is still hampered by the difficulty of applying it in more dynamic and realistic scenarios, such as examining athletes in an exhibition day. The aim of this project is to develop and test a new method for muscle stress monitoring by IRT that works quite autonomously, with minimum human intervention; that is uncomplicated, simple to use; and that is able to deliver its results and emit alerts instantly after image capture. That means, with the support from FAPESP, we will give life to a virtual assistant for sports injury prevention. The field test will consist of using it to monitor thermograms of a soccer team from the major league for 3 months continually. (AU)
