Abstract

Chronic and acute wounds are a worldwide public health problem due to their magnitude, complexity and their costs to the healthcare system. The European Union estimates an annual expenditure of 3% -4% of its health budget for wound care. Currently several technologies are studied in order to develop dressings capable of providing an ideal environment to accelerate the healing process of chronic and acute wounds. In 2017, Brazil imported approximately R$ 980 million in wound dressings to meet domestic demand in the wound treatment. Thus, this project aims to develop a hydrocolloid wound dressing capable of supplying a portion of the internal demand for this type of product. It is intended to develop a blend of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers and subsequently produce a membrane that will be used as a dressing for the treatment of chronic and acute wounds. The prototype physical, chemical and mechanical properties will be evaluated and compared with imported hydrocolloids wound dressing available in the domestic market. (AU)
