Lipid metabolism of bijupirá, Rachycentron canadum juveniles during the postprandial period and using alternative fatty acid sources

Abstract

The use of fish oil (FO) in marine aquaculture is important because of the need for long-chain and highly unsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) from the n-3 series. However, the production of FO is limited, and alternative sources of lower cost and more stable production such as vegetable oils (VO) have been studied. However, this substitution, in most cases, negatively impacts growth and alters lipid metabolism, mainly due to the high amounts of saturated n-6 series (PUFAn-6), monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated FA, and inversely to the absence of LC-PUFAs. An alternative for producing lower cost diets that meets nutritional needs is the use of VO supplemented with LC-PUFAs. However, studies with marine fish have shown that diets with high amounts of SFA, MUFAs and n-6 PUFA, even supplemented with LC-PUFA, alter lipid deposition in the liver and intestine as well as the expression of genes related to the synthesis and oxidation of AGs. Based on this problem, the objectives of this project are: 1) to understand initially the metabolic responses of Rachycentron canadum (bijupirá) juveniles in the postprandial period; 2) to investigate the effects of the use of alternative lipid sources supplemented with the main LC-PUFA on the performance and lipid metabolism of this species. The influence of different ratios of SFA/MUFA and C18 PUFAn-6/LC-PUFA on diets without FO will be evaluated. Growth parameters, FA profile of lipolytic and lipogenic tissues, liver and intestinal morphology, as well as the expression of genes related to the synthesis and oxidation pathways of AGs will be evaluated.
