Development, analysis, improvement, and optimization of anaerobic reactors for wastewater treatment

Abstract

This research aims at the evaluation of anaerobic reactors configurations for wastewater treatment with emphasis in fundamental aspects that provide rational parameters for design and scale-up. This approach, based on reactor configurations, leads to a critical view on different configurations. The study of several alternatives permits a suitable analysis based on a comparative procedure, thus resulting in propositions of specific applications for each reactor configuration. Five reactor configurations will be investigated in this study: the horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactor, the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (AnSBR), the anaerobic expanded/fluidized-bed reactor, the anaerobic membrane reactor and the hybrid anaerobic reactor. An extensive literature review was performed in order to evaluate the actual stage of development of each reactor configuration and new directions for application and development of these reactors were proposed. A multidisciplinary research group, composed by researchers of three Universities, intends to apply engineering and microbiology fundamentals to improve and optimize the anaerobic reactors, also considering cost reduction. Civil, chemical and mechanical engineers and microbiologists compose the research group. (AU)
