Abstract

This proposal involves the investigation of linear and nonlinear phenomena in micro- nano-optical cavities and waveguides; the understanding of the limiting effects of each material, the understanding of the interaction between matter and light, including spontaneous and stimulated emission and the coupling between light, matter, and mechanical degrees of freedom in these structures. Also, it involves the investigation of the coupling between different platforms for photonic integration, and by taking advantage of the new material properties and the achieved new general understanding, create breakthrough applied and fundamental knowledge and solutions for Integrated Photonics Devices. Inasmuch as a thematic research this proposal is organized along three main research fronts that are aligned with these goals: New Materials, Nonlinear Photonics, and hybrid Integration. In many cases, such breakthrough knowledge will lie in the interface of researchers and group expertise's. Explicit objectives evidencing the synergetic characteristic of the research will be presented, with clear goals involving the interaction between different areas. Finally, in order to stimulate the interaction among the group members, most of the testing infrastructure and - more importantly - the students and researchers will be hosted at the Photonics Research Center at Unicamp (Photonicamp). This is a brand-new building with office and laboratory space for researchers from the physics and electrical engineering photonics groups at Unicamp. Finally, most of the fabrication and sample preparation will be carried out at the Device Research Laboratory at IFGW - UNICAMP, at the Center for Semiconductor Components and Nanotechnologies - UNICAMP, and at the MackGraphe Lab - Mackenzie.
