Abstract

The causative agent of toxoplasmosis, Toxoplasma gondii, presents indicators of relationship with the development and progression of schizophrenia. As evidenced by studies, infection by T. gondii can be a triggering factor for psychosis in some individuals, since the parasite has a certain tropism by the central nervous system. Here we will survey clinical and laboratory analyzes of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and / or schizoaffective disorder, comparing: 1) the concentration of IgG and IgM anti-T gondii antibodies in blood samples from patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and / or schizoaffective disorder, and 2) the evolution of the symptoms described in the medical records of these patients, in a defined time frame, providing qualitative evidence of the psychic symptoms, relating diagnosis, serological status and symptoms. We will look for interconnections between the two axes in order to compare T. gondii infection with the remission or non-remission of symptoms of the schizoaffective spectrum, and the residual aspects present in these cases.
