Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an incurable and common neurodegenerative disorder in the elderly, characterized by dopamine depletion in the nigrostriatal pathway. Traditionally, PD has been diagnosed as a pure motor disorder. However, patients have a wide range of non-motor signs and symptoms that usually appear in the pre-motor stage of the disease. Autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction is a common non-motor manifestation in PD associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Conventional clinical treatment relieves motor signals, using dopamine replacement drug therapies, but does not alter the disease progression and fails to handle non-motor signals, complicating the pharmacological management of patients. The growing demand for more effective therapies to treat motor and non-motor manifestations of PD supports the importance of translational approaches based on the use of appropriate animal models. Factors related to lifestyle, such as nutrition, are modifiable determinants in chronic diseases. Brazilian green propolis, a natural product, is the source of a variety of bioactive components with important biological and pharmacological actions described in the scientific literature, but its effects on PD are still little explored. In this work, the Parkinson's disease model induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) will be used, characterized by partial degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway after the injection of 6-OHDA in the striatum. In addition to motor impairment, rats with PD induced by 6-OHDA exhibit a variety of non-motor dysfunctions, such as cardiovascular ones. Based on this, the present project proposes to investigate the effects of Brazilian green propolis on cardiovascular parameters, neuroprotection, glial activation, cerebral and cardiac metabolites, non-synaptic mechanisms, motor outcomes and emotionality of rats with PD induced by 6-OHDA.
