Abstract

Hydrogen can be considered an important alternative to clean energy and feedstocks in the modern world. However, the environmental benefits depend on its production process. Obtaining green hydrogen from the water electrolysis process (water splitting) is seen as a sustainable solution for the coming decades. Although this process seems quite simple, the water oxidation reaction is a major limitation, as it is both thermodynamically (E0 = -1.23 V vs NHE) and kinetically unfavorable and therefore requires a catalyst. The development of efficient, low cost and highly stable catalysts is still a great challenge for the scientific community and for large corporations. Given this scenario, the main motivation for this project is to improve the performance of Prussian cobalt-blue catalysts in the water oxidation reaction. For this, we planned to use the following strategies: morphological control and nanostructuring of particles, creation of defects, and evaluation of the influence of different substrates on catalyst properties. As expected, results, we want to advance in the understanding of the water oxidation reaction mechanisms by Prussian blue derivatives, and we are looking for understanding how the morphology, the defects, the nanostructuration, and the type of substrate affect the performance of these catalysts in the water oxidation. Thus, our plan is to increase the values of turnover frequency (TOF (water oxidation/Co-PB)) which today are about 10-3 to 10-2 or even 10-1. In other words, we want to increase from 10 to 100 times the TOF values for Co-PB derivatives in the water oxidation reaction. Finally, we hope to produce significant advances and high impact in the water oxidation field. (AU)
