Abstract

Focal epithelial hyperplasia or Heck's disease is a rare and benign disease that affects the oral mucosa of children and young adults from various regions of the world and in different ethnic groups, such as Indians and Eskimos. It is a virus-induced proliferation located in the oral squamous epithelium. The sites most prone to the development of this lesion are keratinized and nonkeratinized surfaces. The aim of this study will be to determine a better understanding of the prevalence of Heck's disease. Since these data are scarce in the literature. It is also important to establish the prevalence of human papillomavirus of the oral cavity, mainly HPV-13 and HPV-32, since they are the most associated with this type of lesion in the study population. Methodology: Saliva samples were collected from the natives who presented the oral lesion, as well as from their family nucleus. These samples were frozen for further analysis. The DNA will be extracted by means of the QIAamp® DNA Kit, and the samples will then be analyzed by PCR RT to identify the HPV 13 and 32 viruses. If the presence of HPV 13 or HPV 32 is detected, samples will be sequenced. The data obtained will be tabulated and will receive adequate statistical treatment (p <0.05), comparing the individuals with respect to gender, age group, virus prevalence, and distribution in family nucleus.
