Abstract

Connecting users in remote and rural areas, a typical scenario of a continental country like Brazil, through wired networks is considered expensive and unprofitable for operators due to the high costs incurred with installing base stations and wired backhaul infrastructure. The use of satellites was proposed as a way to serve remote and rural areas. However, due to high deployment costs, large communication delays and high attenuation, they are considered as a last resort solution. As an alternative, in this research project, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are introduced as a cost-effective solution to enable wide connectivity in remote and rural areas. (AU)
