Abstract

Non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) is a condition of continuous or repeated epileptic seizures without motor manifestation. NCSE is recognized as a heterogeneous disorder with several etiologies and clinical manifestations. It is a poorly recognized clinical condition, especially in critically ill or comatose patients. The EEG is fundamental for the characterization of NCSE, however, there are still divergences in EEG patterns. Objective: To assess elderly patients seen in the emergency department with symptoms and signs of disturbance of consciousness and/or mental confusion, whose EEG, clinical, and prognostic aspects characterize a diagnosis of NCSE. Methods: Elderly patients seen at the clinical neurology service of the Emergency Department of the PUC-Campinas University Hospital with symptoms and/or signs of disturbed consciousness, delusions, mental confusion, fluctuations in cognitive functions and consciousness, with no history of acute head trauma. Fifty cases diagnosed with NCSE will be selected, based on patient history and clinical and EEG aspects, and the etiological and prognostic aspects will be studied. Parametric and non-parametric tests appropriate to the situations will be used, with a significance level of p <0.05. Expected results: To characterize, in this age group, the clinical and EEG aspects and the etiological and prognostic data that characterize NCSE in the elderly. To understand the frequency of elderly individuals seen in hospital emergency services with symptoms and signs of disturbed consciousness, delusions, mental confusion, and fluctuations in cognitive functions and consciousness. To obtain the characteristics that characterize the diagnosis of NCSE by assessing the clinical data and the EEG patterns of these elderly individuals. Thus, it is expected to contribute with scientific and technical data in an area that still has great knowledge gaps. (AU)
