Abstract

The aim of this project is to evaluate, over a 12-month period, bone regeneration from a composite based on carbon nanotube, hydroxyapatite and chitosan associated or not with mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) injected into bone defects in sheep tibiae. Twelve sheep will be submitted to ostectomy in the middle third of the diaphysis of the right tibia of 30mm and divided into two groups: Group BIO, with the application of composite carbon nanotube, chitosan and hydroxyapatite; BIOCT group, with the application of the same composite and administration of MSC culture four weeks after surgery. Radiographic, ultrasound and thermographic examinations will be performed at intervals of 30 days. At 12 months, the animals will be euthanized, and the tibiae will be sent to three-dimensional computerized microtomography and histological exams to assess bone regeneration. It is hypothesized that bone defects filled with a composite of carbon nanotube, chitosan and hydroxyapatite in addition to mesenchymal stem cells injected after four weeks of the bone failure will present regeneration compatible with functional tissue.
