Study of nanoceramics for energy application: sintering and interface

Abstract

This document will describe in detail the activities planned to be carried out by the Visiting Researcher, from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. Research motivated by the preparation and design of new materials for the development of devices for the production and storage of clean energy is growing and mandatory to ensure a sustainable energy future. It is evident that nanoscale materials have become the key to this desired technological revolution. Therefore, it is necessary to understand nanometric phenomena for their manipulation based on science and the consequent evolution of the technological field. The greater the knowledge acquired and human resources trained in the manipulation of nanomaterials, the closer we will be to the objectives of mass development of this new technology. In this context, the development and knowledge in the manipulation of new materials called nanoceramics have aroused the interest of the scientific community due to the diversity of possible applications, ranging from the cosmetics, energy, and even war industries. Prof. Castro is recognized as one of the most active researchers on the subject in the United States, having contributed in a unique way with his studies to the understanding of nanoceramics. This recognition by the scientific community in the area can be highlighted by the several awards received, as well as his outstanding position in the American Ceramic Society (ACersS, The American Ceramic Society), having been president of NICE (National Institute of Ceramic Engineering), and as current editor-in-chief of the recently launched new scientific journal, "International Journal of Ceramic Engineering and Science", by Wiley Publishers. Prof. Castro has several publications that have promoted an extraordinary advance in the understanding of nanometric phenomena. His performance has been highlighted in the American and international media on platforms such as Materials Today and MRS Bulletin, and more recently with interviews for the NY Times Wirecutter on the topic of nanoceramic coatings as detailed in his attached CV.The presence of Prof. Castro as a researcher at LNNANO-CNPEM in this period will be of fundamental importance for us to leverage research into the synthesis of nanoceramics and the thermodynamic aspects that govern most of the final properties of these materials and their applications. LNNANO's target materials and interest are currently complex oxide compounds for application as electrolyte and electrodes in batteries, as well as compounds for application in water photoelectrolysis (hydrogen generation). Also as part of your visit, a series of seminars (classes) is scheduled on the fundamentals of how to maintain the nanometric scale in sintered (nanoceramics), covering everything from basic concepts to the use of advanced processing and characterization techniques. These seminars will be recorded and later made available to the scientific community for use as support material in undergraduate and graduate classes across the country. (AU)
