Abstract

Trans-disciplinary biogeography is the ideal science to understand patterns and processes that generated and maintain groups of highly complex and diverse organisms, such as amphibians and reptiles (herpetofauna), especially those that inhabit tropical regions of the globe. Advances in recent decades allowed for the huge accumulation of data on herpetofauna and important discoveries. However, gaps within the multiple facets in the knowledge of herpetofauna diversity (e.g., taxonomic, ecological, geographic and genetic) are still evident and deserve attention as they have delayed the use of these organisms in studies on biodiversity syntheses, global biodiversity scenarios facing climate change, evolutionary biology and testing of biogeographic hypotheses. This research proposal intends to access the main themes needed to advance to biogeographic and evolutionary knowledge of Neotropical herpetofauna (here organized in subproject A-E, goals 1 to 19), but related and complementary approaches, with regard to (A) identification of global biogeographic and evolutionary patterns for amphibians and reptiles; (B) recognition of biogeographic and macroecological patterns of herpetofauna at regional scales, with a focus on neotropical open landscapes; (C) investigate the history of diversification of some clades of amphibians and reptiles from a set of genetic and geographic data, thus contributing to the effort to understand the diversification of Neotropical herpetofauna; (D) assess the impact of climate change on Neotropical herpetofauna by identifying vulnerabilities and establishing conservation priorities; and (E) identify and fill gaps in taxonomic, geographic, evolutionary and ecological niche knowledge of Neotropical herpetofauna. We believe the project will result in important advances in an integrated approach of geographical and evolutionary data to identify regions that contribute with the persistence of biodiversity at different spatial scales, providing basic information for decision-making on conservation at a speed equivalent to the advance of destruction.
