Colonial petitions: political communication and social representation in the Portuguese Empire (1736-1807)

Abstract

This project aims to map and analyze the petitions sent from Portuguese America to the Overseas Council and Secretary of State, taking as central the participation of the various social agents and the institutional paths and responses they generated. In this sense, it is not only an unprecedented effort to understand them together, but also a bold proposal for problematization on imperial legal-political communication. Due to the magnitude of the theme, its analysis is limited to the captaincies of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Mato Grosso and Goiás. Its initial temporal cut is justified by the creation of the Secretariats of State in 1736, including one linked to the overseas, and the end by the alteration generated by the coming of the Court to Rio de Janeiro. The proposal provides a collaboration with two associated researchers, one of them linked to the systems area, due to the prediction of the creation of a database and its availability to the community. It also aims to promote a Laboratory of studies on the subject (already accredited as a CNPq Directory) as a space for discussion, training and dissemination of the project. (AU)
