Contribution of Brazilian Scientific Diaspora to the Brazilian international cooperation

Abstract

This project analyzes the diaspora's contribution to the international scientific cooperation regarding COVID-19, including its expansion and pattern changes. The project seeks to close two knowledge gaps on the Brazilian scientific diaspora's contribution to the development of specific scientific fields. The first contribution refers to identifying the Brazilian scientists' international mobility, their settlement in other countries, and cooperation with scientists in Brazil. The second contribution delves into analyzing successful and failure cases of the migrant scientists' contribution to the COVID-19 research, including their participation in changing international cooperation patterns. The scarcity of studies on ST&I diasporas at the international level hinders the advancement of global analyses on the phenomenon and the design of public policies. Therefore, this project seeks to contribute to the global debate of ST&I diasporas, considering the inexistence of international publications on the Brazilian diaspora. A multi-method strategy will be employed, including bibliometric study, curriculum analysis, questionnaire, and in-depth interviews. By offering new evidence and empirical data on an as-yet-unknown diaspora, new issues from different perspectives may arise globally. (AU)
