Abstract
WFDC1 is a highly conserved ancient gene encoding a small, secreted protein present in the extracellular matrix with critical roles in angiogenesis, cancer, immune response, and tissue repair. WFDC1 upregulation has been associated with changes in endothelial biomarkers, cardiac hypertrophy and cardiac failure. However, its specific role during normal cardiovascular development, adult homeostasis and disease is still unknown. This project aims to investigate WFDC1 functions in cardiovascular development and disease by integrating Developmental and Systems Biology approaches in different model organisms and in vitro systems. The project outcomes will have a significant impact in discovering new genes causing cardiovascular disease. (AU)
