Abstract

Despite the growing presence of women in endurance competitions, studies carried out exclusively with men vastly outnumbers female-only-studies (4:1), in addition, only 1/3 of scientific works that have included both sexes have considered it as a variable. Therefore, often the results of scientific studies obtained for male populations are generalized to women without justification. It is known that physiological differences between genders influence athletic performance. Understanding the levels of association between physiological variables and aerobic performance and the relative importance of each one, with female performance in a long-term event is essential to advance in understanding the problem and to adapt the structure of resistance training for women. In addition, another issue is related to the lack of knowledge about the possible interference of the intensity with which the athlete performs swimming or cycling on the intensity with which she will perform the subsequent activity (cycling or running). Thus, the aim of this study will be to verify the levels of association between maximum oxygen consumption, ventilatory thresholds, economy of movement and body composition of female triathletes with their respective performances in an Olympic Triathlon event. Subsequently, a prediction equation for performance in the modality based on the measured variables will be described. We will also aim to verify if the intensity with which the athlete develops swimming is associated with the intensity of cycling and if the intensity with which the athlete develops cycling is associated with the intensity with which she develops running during a triathlon event (Olympic distance). For this purpose, 40 Olympic triathlon female athletes will be evaluated and will undergo two cardiopulmonary tests (treadmill and bicycle), with the aim of evaluating maximum oxygen uptake, speed or maximum load, ventilatory thresholds and economy of movement, in addition to evaluating the composition body to measure the percentage of fat mass and lean mass.
