Abstract
Net zero carbon emission technologies worldwide include carbon capture and storage (CCS). Safe geological storage is essential to enable the energy transition. NERC-FAPESP EHMPRES will stablish a new collaboration between world-leading experts in CO2 storage reservoir characterization from the NOC and the IEE-RCGI/USP. This international collaboration will develop novel capabilities in understanding CO2-induced geochemical and transport changes occurring in geological reservoirs from the geophysical record, which is essential for effective implementation of the CCS plans, internationally. Collaborating with the IEE-RCGI/USP will provide NOC with the unique opportunity to exchange knowledge about exceptional Brazilian reservoir formations targeted for CCS, including joint field trips to select and collect target samples to undertake joint research and consolidate developments in this area. This project will generate a comprehensive proof-of-concept dataset to assess the viability of challenging CO2-reactive CCS reservoirs, through direct data interpretation and multiscale multidisciplinary geophysical and reactive modelling. The international collaboration is essential to enable access and interpretation of natural reactive geological complexes targeted for CCS, to develop and validate tools to assess reactive reservoirs for storing gas worldwide.
