Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate digitally modeled and 3D printed artifacts from the examination of the reception procedures established in the dialectic with their creation in order to apprehend how the "material" and "procedure" adopted can condition processes of customization. The artifacts accepted as objects of study are the "transformational prostheses", more specifically the category of "prostheses as body sculptures" (Tavares, 2021). Transformational prostheses keep reference to the notion of "transformational object" by Bollas (2015) and to the concept of objectile, by Deleuze (1991). In addition to meeting a utilitarian demand, transformational prostheses such as body sculptures manifest themselves as three-dimensional artistic pieces attached to the body, capable of being aesthetically customized by the receptor and acting as a way to physical and psychic transformations, in order to strengthen his/her self-confidence. The research is based on bibliographic research, selection, and analysis of objects of study, visits to laboratories of design and manufacture of prostheses and, not least, on a laboratory stage, which includes both the design and manufacture of the cladding surface prototype for upper limb functional forearm taking into account the ergonomic, aesthetic and psychical demands of a user to be selected. The research contemplates a transdisciplinary relationship between the areas of Arts, Design, Mechatronics and Medicine, favoring new points of view of the problem to be investigated, namely: how can the creation of design system(s) based on the notions of objectile and transformational prosthesis enable, through 3D computer modeling and 3D printing, customization processes of upper limb prostheses, promoting or reiterating the self-esteem of the individuals who will use them? It is believed that this research will impact the studies of the relationship between creation and reception in the universes of digital art and design, since it intends to insert the user as an agent of customization of his own prosthesis. This research can fill, in the academic context, national (and, perhaps, international) gaps in terms of research and development of prostheses that address the double bias: functional and aesthetic. As a result, the design and fabrication of a coating surface prototype that involves the functional structure of upper limb forearm will be developed, as well as the dissemination of research through the publication of articles and participation in academic events.
