Abstract

How to sustainably feed 10 billion people by 2050? Agriculture relies on agrochemicals to control pests and increase yields. Brazil ranks 44th and France 48th on pesticides (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization). Fertilizers pollute rivers, groundwater, promote eutrophication and air pollution. Pesticides cause 355,000 deaths yearly by overexposure/misuse and affect non-target wildlife and biodiversity. Recent advances have unraveled the roles of small extracellular vesicles (50-500 nm) produced by plants and bacteria as an adaptive toolbox to manipulate microbe-plant interactions. Plant and microorganisms also synthesize biogenic inorganic nanoparticles (BINs) with varied activities. Overall, these nano-sized carriers of active molecules are inspiring models to develop Nature- and bio-based solutions enabled by Nanotechnologies to tackle sustainability in plant protection. Smart nanopesticides have new or enhanced properties and can deliver the active ingredient upon environmental stimuli. The nano aspect can concern the active ingredient and/or the carrier. The project aims to design smart nano-enabled phytoprotection strategies, with less impact on off-targets. Brazil and France teams will combine multidisciplinary expertise to develop safer-by-design solutions based on plant/microorganisms BINs and ecofriendly biopolymers-metal hybrids nanoparticles (HNP) to develop sustainable alternatives for crop protection. The team will cooperatively design, synthesize the new NPs, analyze the interaction mechanisms with plants and the impact on off-targets, as human cell lines, plants, nematodes, soil and plant microbiota, soil fertility, and the aquatic ecosystem. Taking advantage of a panel of different surfaces NPs in BINs and HNPs, we will explore the relationships between properties and impact/fate of nanocarriers in the plant-soil ecosystem. (AU)
