Development and Assessment of an intervention based on positive psychology Florishing Program: a mixed methods study

Abstract

The concept of flourishing can be considered an expansion of the concept of health, including other aspects of a person's life, such as happiness and life satisfaction; purpose and meaning of life, and relationships. Although observational studies have already shown promising results of the flourishing approach to health outcomes, there is still a gap in literature regarding intervention studies. Objective: to develop an intervention protocol to promote flourishing and to evaluate its effectiveness in improving the mental health and quality of life of individuals with mild and moderate depressive symptoms. Methods: Mixed-design study with a quasi-experimental approach associated with a qualitative approach. Initially, for the development of the intervention protocol, an expert committee will be consulted, in which some evaluation rounds will be carried out to reach consensus and adapt the proposal through the Delphi method. Subsequently, the developed protocol will be subjected to a quasi-experimental study in which participants with mild or moderate depressive symptoms, aged between 18 and 59, will be recruited. Depressive symptoms will be screened using the PHQ-9 scale, and the individuals who meet the criteria will be invited to take part in the study. Individuals with severe depressive symptoms, without Internet access, or who have not finished elementary school will be excluded. The intervention protocol will be carried out in groups through a virtual platform (online and synchronous), with one session per week, for a total of 12 weeks. The team will consist of a facilitator and a co-facilitator in each session to conduct the proposed script of questions. Session topics include physical and mental health, kindness, love, gratitude, forgiveness, resilience, spirituality etc. Secondary outcomes, such as anxiety, quality of life and life satisfaction, spirituality, and forgiveness, will also be evaluated. The qualitative part of the study will be carried out simultaneously, aiming to deepen the understanding of the results of the quantitative part. Expected results: the expectation is to find a reduction in the depressive symptoms of participants, as well as lower anxiety levels, and an increase in the quality of life and secondary outcomes evaluated.
