Abstract

The project "Democracy, populism and the extreme right" seeks to articulate the results of research developed within two other projects carried out at Unicamp's Center for Studies on Public Opinion (Cesop): "The Quality of Democracy in Brazil: political representation, parties and the integrity system" (18/02738-0), funded by Fapesp, and the Institute of Democracy and Democratization of Communication (IDDC), National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) funded by CNPq (465535/2014- 3), Capes and Fapemig. The project foresees the stay of professor Benjamin Teitelbaum, from the University of Colorado in Boulder, for seven months at Unicamp. During this period, the results of ongoing research on the following topics will be discussed: "new radical right movements", "right-wing populism in Brazil", "right-wing populism in a comparative perspective" and "effects of populist discourses on the quality of democracy".It is expected that the professor will contribute to the debate on the ideological motivations of radical right movements, the different forms of social penetration of the discourses of these movements in different social and political contexts and with qualitative research techniques that allow more robustness to the empirical findings of the ongoing researches. In addition to these research activities, the development of a joint research project is expected. The visiting professor will also teach a regular course in the Graduate Program in Political Science (PPGCP) at Unicamp.
