Abstract

This project investigates the institutional reconfigurations of the Brazilian State, religious organizations, and civil associations in light of the incorporation of principles and the implementation of policies related to pluralism established as an intrinsic value to democracy by the 1988 Constitution. The main focus of the proposal is to describe the tensions that followed the changes in the 1988 Constitution and understand how they have accompanied the current visibility of religious pluralism in Brazil. Moreover, we will investigate how it strains secularism and religious equality and other forms of difference, such as racial, ethnic, and gender differences. Attentive to the reality of this phenomenon at the global level, we will develop our analysis through at least three levels: examining how pluralism, understood as a positive normative value of citizenship, is incorporated into the State's agenda; the study of disputes and reactions to pluralism at the level of civil organizations; the description of pluralism as an experience of religious, racial, ethnic and gender diversity in everyday life.
