Abstract

The research project will measure adiabaticity in an electron gas subject to a localized potential that varies on a controllable time scale. A tight-binding Hamiltonian discretized by a real-space formulation of the numerical renormalization-group procedure will describe the electron gas and determine its time evolution under the action of the localized potential. Of primary interest is the accuracy of the particle-density metric recently proposed by Skelt and D'Amico in computations of the adiabaticity threshold. To test the procedure, the particle-density metric will be compared with the wavefunction metric for various strengths and time scales of the potential. A zero-temperature computation is expected to be completed during the visitor's stay, the extension to finite temperatures being deferred to a subsequent effort. (AU)
