Scientific collaboration for fetal programing in cattle

Abstract

Dr. Carl Dahlen, from North Dakota State University, will serve as a visiting researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, Pirassununga campus from April to August, 2023. Dr. Dahlen's research program has been geared toward enhancing reproductive efficiency in beef cattle, understanding the long-term impacts of maternal nutrition on offspring outcomes that may extend in multigenerational and transgenerational manner, and understanding the impacts of paternal (i.e. sire) programming in livestock species. Dr. Dahlen's will use his extensive background in these areas to serve as a collaborator and advisor to USP researchers on 4 experiments within their project "Earlier weaning of calves from Nellore cows and its effects on the fetal programming and on the productive and reproductive performance of the next progeny (FAPESP; 17/18938-0)". In addition, Dr. Dahlen will collaborate with other PI's at USP on their FAPESP-funded projects, Assist USP researchers with developing proposals for FAPESP and other funding agencies, service on thesis and dissertation committees, develop a new course related to developmental programming in livestock species, participate in bi-weekly journal club, deliver guest lectures in English to enhance internationalization, work with USP faculty to design and deliver a short course in his specialty area, visit other Sao Paulo research locations and interact with faculty in his specialty area, and draft research proposal focusing on developmental programming with USP researchers.
