Abstract

This project, developed in partnership with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), aims to study the relations between multiple experiences of exile and the translation of Russian texts. We will examine the production of intellectuals-translators who emigrated from Eastern and Central Europe between the 1920s and the 1940s, based on four interrelated theoretical axes: a) Biography of exile; b) Poetics of exile; c) Ontology of exile; d) Networks of exile. We hope to produce 1) a critical, theoretical and historiographical reflection on the relations between exile and translation, with emphasis on the Russian-speaking production, but always articulated with other cases (notably, that of the German-speaking exiles), and 2) an extensive research of primary sources, aiming at the systematization and problematization of biographical and archival materials concerning translators in exile. Thus, the project hopes to articulate with two of the themes proposed by the LinCAr Call for Proposals: "Archive" and "Memory and Trauma". (AU)
