Organization, diversification and expansion of records of Unicamp culture collections: proposal of a pilot structure for the constitution of an integrated network

Abstract

Culture collections serve society in the most diverse ways in numerous sectors of industry, environment and health. Their activities are not limited to the preservation of genetic resources, but also act as centers where unique information is safely guarded, such as epidemiological memory and the record of variations in etiological agents. The State University of Campinas - UNICAMP, is made up of 22 teaching and research units, it has a leadership in the number of patents and publication of scientific articles, and offers a structure of interdisciplinary centers and nuclei which are authentic links between research and society. Among these, the Pluridisciplinary Center for Chemical, Biological and Agricultural Research - CPQBA, houses the Brazilian Collection of Microorganisms of Environment and Industry - CBMAI, institutionally recognized, whose mission is to act as a Microbial Biobank, isolating, preserving, generating knowledge and providing biological material, with assured compliance and quality. In January 2020, it was accredited in the ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17.025/2017 standards, in 13 technical procedures involved in 2 tests related to the maintenance of biological material. Over years of routine work at UNICAMP Clinical Hospital, the Fungal Investigation Laboratory (LIF) of the Faculty of Medical Sciences has built a collection of more than 18,000 isolates of filamentous fungi and yeasts, of interest to health and pharmacology. Seeking to generate and expand knowledge about the application potential of two UNICAMP collections, it is intended to: 1. Catalog, organize and authenticate the fungi of greatest interest within the LIF collection; 2. Improve data on the morphological, molecular and functional characters of CBMAI microorganisms. The goal is to add value to the collections and provide updated information on the application of strains through an online catalog, with a view to building a pilot structure for the organization of Culture Collections of UNICAMP, in an integrated network. It is assumed that the expansion of the records of the collections will increase their visibility, resulting in new partnerships with research institutions and companies in Brazil and abroad. (AU)
