Abstract
This proposal aims at developing experimental and numerical tools to understand and model particle plugs in fluid filled narrow vertical pipes, an industrial relevant situation. Taking advantage of the interaction of experimental and numerical simulations, it is proposed to test the stability of the formation of particle plugs depending on the particle friction properties and the ratio of the particle to pipe diameter. In the problem of particle plug formation, many forces are involved: gravity, viscous, inertia, and fluid/particle interaction. First, the effect of particle friction will be systematically tested using Teflon treated particles. Second, the ratio of the particle to diameter will be analyzed through controlled experiments. Finally, the experiments will be compared to numerical simulations where the fluid-particle, particle-particle and the particle-wall interactions will be taken into account. This collaboration will contribute to a better understanding of the critical conditions for the formation of particle plugs and then optimization of particle transport in pipes, and it will be the starting point for new proposals between the French and Brazilian groups.
