Catch and pay versus catch and release: economic feasibility for small-scale fisheries in Southeast Brazil

Abstract

Recreational fishing has been gaining momentum and new adepts in Brazil, especially in the Southeast region, where this activity in private aquatic systems is beginning to assume the same importance as recreational fishing in public domain aquatic systems. This study aims to characterize the two types of fisheries (catch and pay and catch and release) in different small-scale aquaculture models and verify their economic feasibility. The investment structures, costing and profitability indicators will be based on methodologies already applied and validated in different economic feasibility studies of aquaculture/fishing projects. The following will be considered in the analysis of expenses: 1) Investments necessary for the implementation of each production system, accounting for depreciation, replacements and interest on the capital invested; 2) Effective operational cost (EOC), all the effective expenses in cash for the operationalization of the two types of enterprises; 3) Total operating cost (TOC), sum of financial charges resulting from the depreciation of structures and social charges; 4) Total production cost (TPC), sum of TOC, facilities depreciation and annual interest on the amount invested; 5) Production cost per kilogram of fish by dividing the values of EOC, TOC and TPC by the biomass of specimens harvested according to the type of enterprise and proposed scenarios. Sensitivity analyzes will also be carried out in order to assess the impacts of possible fluctuations in the size of the enterprise, productivity and sales price that could occur with different types of fishing grounds. Another objective of this study will be to compare the efficiency of the lambari Deuterodon iguape as live bait against the artificial bait in the recreational fishing in catch and pay, to test the hypothesis that the lambari is as efficient as the artificial bait, traditionally used in the captures of carnivorous species by recreational fishermen. For this, four fishermen will work monthly, between March 2023 and February 2024. For the statistical analysis, 2x2 and nx2 contingency tables will be built and subsequent analysis of the proportions between factors by applying Pearson's chi-square independence test. (AU)
