SocialNet: social sensing to leverage new technologies and applications for the development of urban societies

Abstract

New massive sources of data, such as Waze and Twitter, known as location-based social networks (LBSN), enable large-scale observation of users in (almost) real-time and during considerable windows of time, thus being a source of social sensing. Thus, our research is guided by the objectives of: (1) characterizing and modeling the patterns of social behavior and city dynamics with the help of different LBSNs; and (2) exploring identified patterns for proposing new services and applications to enhance the development of urban societies. From this perspective, a clear understanding of the patterns of social behavior and the dynamics of cities can lead to insights into mechanisms that contribute to developing more sophisticated services and applications in urban computing. The research proposed here aims to characterize and model the patterns of social behavior and the dynamics of cities. Particular interest is in cultural and urban mobility patterns, as well as factors that can be used to classify different geographic regions and understand the behavior of groups of users in different scenarios (both physical and virtual). In addition, this research also addresses the exploration of patterns identified in new mechanisms and services, particularly new mechanisms for the study of cultural differences on a large scale considering different aspects, new mechanisms to assist in the difficult task of classifying areas and studying the behavior of user groups facing complex situations, such as polarized scenarios, as well as new application services that improve the daily lives of users in cities.
