Unraveling the history of ancient mountains using isotope geochemistry and geochronology.

Abstract

This proposal aims to bring to Brazil for a two-months visit one of the world's leading expert on radiogenic isotope geochemistry and geochronology, Professor Jeffrey Vervoort. During the visit Prof. Vervoort will work on previously sampled ancient rocks from Brazil and Africa that record crustal processes that shaped the early Earth. This research is associated with a collaborative research between Prof. Vervoort and Prof. Dr. Vinícius Tieppo Meira (PI), and includes a regular grant from FAPESP (to Vinícius Tieppo Meira) and NSF (to Jeffrey Vervoort). The main questions investigated by these research projects include the constraints on time and processes in the initiation of the modern plate tectonics, and crust formation, modification and stabilization during the evolution of the early Earth. The visit will also provide the opportunity for the Brazilian geoscience community to attend to a short course and lectures on state-of-the-art radiogenic isotope geochemistry and geochronology.
