High Resolution Computational Model of the National Interconnected System for Sizing and Positioning of Energy Storage Systems

Abstract

With the growth of intermittent and unpredictable sources of generation in the Brazilian electrical system, especially wind and photovoltaic, large-scale energy storage systems are options to help mitigate the negative effects of these sources on the electrical grid. Such systems have been widely used in several countries with success for some decades. However, due to the history of the large presence of flexible and dispatchable sources in the Brazilian electricity grid, only recently the sector has begun to consider storage systems as viable in the country and, for this reason, there is still no regulatory framework and there are few expansion planning studies that consider storage systems as candidates. Therefore, this work proposes the creation of a tool to study the operation and expansion of the Brazilian electrical grid, considering the possibility of large energy storage systems. The tool will be developed in the software PLEXOS assisted by spreadsheets with VBA resources, and it will be composed of a robust database and optimization models. Methodologies will be developed to quantify the benefits of storage systems, and to size and position these systems on the grid. As a result of this study, a methodology capable of contributing to the creation of regulatory bases for the insertion of storage systems in Brazil is expected. It is also expected that the created database and models will be able to contribute to grid expansion studies considering storage systems as candidates. (AU)
