Agricultural frontier, green grabbing and land control in the Cerrados of Piauí

Abstract

The dynamics of agricultural frontier expansion is something present in many parts of the world, especially in countries of the Global South. One of the consequences of the continuous expansion of capitalist agriculture over areas of native vegetation and traditional communities is the change in land control. Thus, the main objective of this research is to analyze the restructuring of the land control regime in the Piauí Cerrados, based on the practice of green grabbing. We will analyze the dismantling and construction of new regimes, as well as the forms of resistance for the maintenance of previous forms of land control by traditional communities. In addition to a bibliographical review and field work, the research methodology also involves the analysis and mapping of the overlapping areas occupied by communities in the wet valleys with rural properties and Legal Reserve areas of agricultural companies registered respectively in the Land Management System (SIGEF) and the Rural Environmental Registry (SICAR). Among the results, it is expected to substantiate the concepts of green grabbing, land control regime and agricultural frontier, in addition to the foundation of arguments, proposals and public policies for the recognition and demarcation of land and territories of communities in the humid valleys.
